Moon lamps look similar in photos, so size is the easiest thing to get wrong. Our 3D Moon Lamp comes in three sizes. Here is how they compare and where each one works best.
The three sizes
- Small, 12 cm (4.7 in): about the width of a CD. A good fit for a bedside table, a narrow shelf or a child’s desk.
- Medium, 15 cm (6 in): about the size of a small melon. The all-rounder for a bedroom, and the usual choice as a gift.
- Plus, 18 cm (7 in): noticeably larger; a centerpiece for a living-room shelf, a sideboard or a wide windowsill.
If you are unsure, cut a circle of paper to each diameter and stand it where the lamp will go. A sphere looks bigger in a room than its diameter suggests.
Where it works best
- Bedside: the soft glow is enough to see by without waking you up fully.
- Nursery or child’s room: as a night light on a high shelf, out of reach.
- Shelf or desk: as a decorative piece that also looks good switched off, since the surface is textured like the real moon.
Power and battery
The lamp is battery powered and switches on with a simple toggle, so there is no cable to hide and you can stand it anywhere. The trade-off is that the battery will need replacing from time to time; switch the lamp off when you are not using it to make it last.
Battery safety: the lamp uses a button battery. Button batteries are dangerous if swallowed. Keep spare and used batteries away from children, and make sure the battery cover is closed properly.
Care
- Dust it with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use water or cleaning sprays.
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters.
- The lamp is light and made of plastic, so place it where it will not be knocked off its stand.
As a gift
A moon lamp suits birthdays, housewarmings and new-baby gifts because it needs no setup and fits any room. For a gift, the medium size is the safest choice.
