USB-C or 3.5 mm: Which Retro Handset Fits Your Phone?

A retro handset plugs into your phone and lets you take calls on a classic telephone receiver. The only real decision is the connector, and it depends on the phone you have. Our Dialtone handset comes in a USB-C version and a 3.5 mm version.

Which connector does your phone have?

  • iPhone 15 or newer: USB-C. Choose the USB-C handset.
  • iPhone 7 to iPhone 14: these have a Lightning port and no headphone jack. Choose the 3.5 mm handset and plug it into a Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone adapter.
  • iPhone 6s or older, and the first iPhone SE: these have a headphone jack. Choose the 3.5 mm handset.
  • Android phones: most current models have USB-C only, so choose the USB-C handset. If your phone still has a round headphone jack, either version will work.
  • Laptops and tablets: use whichever port the device has. The 3.5 mm version needs a combined headphone and microphone jack to carry your voice.

Not sure? Look at the bottom edge of your phone. An oval port the same shape as your charger plug on a recent phone is USB-C. A small round hole is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

How to use it

  • Plug the handset in before or during a call. The phone treats it like a wired headset.
  • Answer and dial on the phone’s screen as usual, then lift the handset to talk and listen.
  • Adjust the volume with the phone’s volume buttons.
  • If the caller cannot hear you, check that the plug is pushed in fully and that the phone has switched to the headset.

Why people use one

  • Comfort on long calls: a full-size receiver is easier to hold than a flat phone, and you can keep the phone on the desk in front of you.
  • Keeping the phone away from your head: some people simply prefer it.
  • The look: it makes a fun desk accessory and an unusual gift, in black, red or yellow.

Good to know

  • The handset is wired. There is nothing to charge or pair.
  • It works for voice and video calls in any app that works with a wired headset.
  • Thick phone cases can stop a plug from seating fully. If the sound cuts out, try without the case.
